چکیده

We investigate evolution of star clusters in external tidal field by means of N body simulations. We followed seven sets of cluster models whose central concentration and strength of the tidal field are different. We found that the mass loss timescale due to escape of stars, tmloss, and its dependence on the two-body relaxation timescale, trh,i, are determined by the strength of the tidal field. The logarithmic slope [≡ d ln(tmloss)/d ln(trh,i)] approaches to near unity for the cluster models in weaker tidal field. The timescale and the dependence are almost independent of the central concentration for clusters in the tidal field of the same strength. In our results, the scaling found by Baumgardt (2001) can be seen only in the cluster models with moderately strong tidal field.

A comprehensive set of simulations studying the influence of gas expulsion on star cluster evolution

We have carried out a large set of N -body simulations studying the effect of residualgas expulsion on the survival rate and final properties of star clusters. We have varied the star formation efficiency, gas expulsion timescale and strength of the external tidal field, obtaining a three-dimensional grid of models which can be used to predict the evolution of individual star clusters or whole ...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Dynamical evolution of star clusters in tidal fields

We report results of a large set of N -body calculations aimed to study the evolution of multi-mass star clusters in external tidal fields. Our clusters start with the same initial mass-functions, but varying particle numbers, orbital types and density profiles. Our main focus is to study how the stellar mass-function and other cluster parameters change under the combined influence of stellar e...

Orbital Decay and Tidal Disruption of a Star Cluster: Analytical Calculation

The orbital decay and tidal disruption of a star cluster in a galaxy is studied in an analytical manner. Owing to dynamical friction, the star cluster spirals in toward the center of the galaxy. Simultaneously, the galactic tidal field strips stars from the outskirts of the star cluster. Under an assumption that the star cluster undergoes a self-similar evolution, we obtain the condition and ti...

The role of galaxy mergers on the evolution of star clusters

Interacting galaxies favour the formation of star clusters but are also suspected to affect their evolution through an intense and rapidly varying tidal field. Treating this complex behaviour remains out-of-reach of (semi-)analytical studies. By computing the tidal field from galactic models and including it into star-by-star N-body simulations of star clusters, we monitor the structure and mas...
